Event Recap: Katiba Day 2025 – Civic Education for Constitutional Empowerment

On August 27, 2025, the Kenya Workers Rights and Harmonization Program (KWRHP) joined forces with the KIOS Foundation, the CSOs Network, and Inform Action to commemorate Katiba Day—a day dedicated to reflecting on and celebrating the Kenyan Constitution.

This collaborative civic education forum, held in Bungoma, brought together community members, workers, and local leaders to deepen their understanding of the supreme law of the land. The event underscored the vital truth that the Constitution is not a distant document but a living tool for justice and empowerment.

Why the Constitution Matters for Workers

The 2010 Constitution of Kenya is the bedrock of all rights, including workers’ rights. Our session focused on demystifying key chapters and articles that directly impact the lives of ordinary Kenyans, including:

  • Chapter Four: The Bill of Rights – Emphasizing the right to fair labor practices, dignity, and freedom from discrimination.

  • Article 41 – Labor Relations – Detailing the right to fair remuneration, reasonable working conditions, and the freedom to unionize.

  • Chapter Six: Leadership and Integrity – Highlighting the standards for public servants and the role of citizens in demanding accountability.

By understanding these provisions, workers and community members are better equipped to challenge injustice and hold leaders accountable.

A Collaborative Effort for Greater Impact

This event leveraged the unique strengths of each partner:

  • KIOS Foundation: Provided expertise on human rights advocacy and the international frameworks that support constitutionalism.

  • CSOs Network: Mobilized a broad base of civil society actors to ensure wide participation and grassroots impact.

  • Inform Action: Contributed its focus on using information and media to drive social change, helping translate legal articles into actionable knowledge.

  • KWRHP: Grounded the discussion in the daily realities of workers, linking constitutional rights to practical issues like wage theft, safety violations, and gender discrimination.

Our Commitment

Katiba Day is more than a celebration; it is a call to action. KWRHP and its partners remain committed to fostering a culture of constitutionalism where every citizen, especially the working class, knows their rights and has the courage to demand them.

We believe that an informed citizenry is the strongest pillar of a just and democratic society.
