Event Recap: Bungoma Chapter Launch – #Tunainuka for Accountability and Prosperity

The Kenya Workers Rights and Harmonization Program (KWRHP) proudly stood with Inuka Ni Sisi Kenya and Maskani ya Taifa to officially launch the Bungoma Chapter of a powerful citizen-driven movement. Under the unifying banner of #Tunainuka (Kiswahili for “We Are Rising”), this event marked a pivotal moment for the people of Bungoma, declaring an end to the culture of silence and the beginning of a new era of active citizenship.

The forum directly addressed the root causes of poverty and stagnation in the region: corruption, mismanagement of public resources, tribalism, nepotism, and poor governance. The message was clear—these vices are not just political issues; they are direct attacks on the economic well-being of every worker, entrepreneur, and family in Bungoma.

What We Are Rising Against (#TunainukaAgainst):

The movement is a collective stand against the systemic barriers that deny citizens their rightful opportunities:

  • Corruption & Mismanagement: That steals funds meant for public services and infrastructure.

  • Tribalism & Nepotism: That denies qualified individuals jobs and contracts based on their surname or origin instead of merit.

  • Discrimination: In all its forms, which hinders inclusive growth.

  • Poor Leadership & Governance: That prioritizes self-enrichment over public service.

Bungoma #Tunainuka: A New Chapter for Accountability and Economic Justice

What We Are Rising For (#TunainukaFor):

#Tunainuka is a proactive demand for a future where every citizen can thrive. We are rising to secure:

  • Plenty of Opportunities: Fair access to jobs, investments, government contracts, and quality services.

  • Transparent & Accountable Governance: Where leaders are held to the highest standards of fiscal discipline and responsibility.

  • Efficient Infrastructure & Service Delivery: That supports business growth and improves quality of life.

  • Sustainable Development: That is inclusive, adaptive, and benefits all residents of Bungoma.

KWRHP’s Role: Linking Workers’ Rights to Good Governance

KWRHP emphasized that the fight for workers’ rights is intrinsically linked to the fight against corruption. A county budget drained by graft means no money for public works projects that create jobs. Nepotism in hiring means qualified workers are denied fair employment. This partnership strengthens our mission by tackling the systemic issues that perpetuate worker exploitation and economic inequality.

The Way Forward

The launch ignited a commitment to action. The Bungoma Chapter will serve as a watchdog, an advocacy platform, and a resource center, empowering citizens to:

  • Demand transparency in county budgeting and procurement.

  • Report corruption and malpractice safely.

  • Advocate for merit-based employment in public and private sectors.

This is more than an event; it is the start of a sustained movement. Bungoma #Tunainuka!
